back on board...#52 & #53

I'm back in action and 85% recovered from my accident and the resulting concussion, which had left me basically brain dead/dumb as an ox for about 2 weeks while I recovered...and hey I'm more or less a nerd and without my brains there wasn't much left !!! No way could I have faced such a seemingly involved process as this until now.

To add to woes at the time my computer went "on the blink" and I also had a falling out with a good friend, so it wasn't the best of times. Anyway, enough moaning, it's a double post today.

( before you ask...yes I have my brain back, thanks to time and some weird drug called Sandomigran )

Lets start with- #52

The Nivens were on the Woosh label outa Newcastle ( on Tyne that is ), the same label that released the great Holidaymakers 7" ( #2 ), and the band seemed to come from Northumberland. Indifferent Dance Centre were a 4 piece outa Chichester ( GB ) and give nothing away about themselves other than their total "indie" status, saying on the inner slip of paper "We've no Scotland, Martin Hannett, Paul Morley, Postcard or Factory to lend credibility to this record"....aaah just the way I like it!! Ultra obscure ( truly indie ) post punk !!

Also of note in this one is a French version of "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" by some Gallic lass called Isabelle, a contribution by an English lass called Laura Logic ( Essential Logic ), some vintage Cabs and finally a promo 7" of Dead Eyes Opened by Severed Heads, from basically the 2nd version on the ( vinyl ) album of Since The Accident ( as opposed to the orig cassette ). By the way the voice used on Dead Eyes Opened was a chappie called Edgar Lustgarten and was from a 1924 radio play called "Death on the Crumbles" which Tom Ellard obviously had on record ( or his dad Dr John ) ( even his mum Joan maybe ). After years of searching for this record I finally found an mp3 of the whole radio play, posted here, which I found quite exciting to get the raw voice after 24 or so years ! The famous words are about 19.30 in.

Cartoons were a Sydney band doing a 60's guitar pop thing and the song we have today is the b-side to "Watch Out Beware", but both sides used to get played in my house in the day and I always preferred the b-side anyhow. Then it's the original Phantom 7" of Average Inadequacy, which incidentally I see from the looking in the pile the 2nd version of Average Inadequacy is first cab off the rank in the next mix I do, so be warned !

After that we have The Slits featuring Andrew Sherwood on the controls ( meaning there's a great 'dub' on the b-side ). The Metronomes were from Melbourne and consisted of Alister Webb, Andrew Picouleau and Ash Wednesday.

The Sea Stories track is from a 4-track ep called "The User's Club", relased on the Rampant label and featured most of the labels acts - Sea Stories, The Odolites, An Ordinary Field and Jack's World and was a promo for a venue in Carlton called The User's Club.

A bit of Tactics never hurt anyone, especially when it's their 2nd single on the legendary Doublethink recs, in fact it's a Double A ( along with Outdoors ) ( different to the My Houdini version ).

Finally of note is the first Scritti ep, Skank Bloc Bologna the "main" track but I thought I'd play one of the songs from the other side for a change.
